PHENOMENOLOGICAL TRANSPARENCY : THE EXPANSION OF STRATIFIED SPACE

The materialization of space through the superimposition of vertical planes and parallel spatial strips is a resource originating in the pictorial and architectural works of Cubism. Colin Rowe and Robert Slutzky in their work “Transparency: Literal and Phenomenal” used the concept “stratification” to name a formal resource related to a new conception of deep space without resorting to perspective: “PHENOMENOLOGICAL TRANSPARENCY” generates a two-dimensional depth where its plasticity expresses the fullness of volume by resorting not only to vision but also to touch.

The proposal develops an investigation on the superposition of vertical layers, of fragments of discontinuous experiences and diverse materials in different relative positions but strongly linked to each other: a METHODOLOGY OF ACTION where direct and indirect emotional relationships and the positioning of the subject within the “spatial system” is more important than the representation of the system itself: the MULTIPLICITY OF READINGS is encouraged for A NEW “FLAT” SPACIALITY - expanding the peripheral vision of architecture and thus the amplification of TOUCH RELATIONSHIPS. A “dynamic structural function” is thus established, intensifying the tension between figure and background through SPACIO-EMOTIONAL SUPERPOSITIONS.

The final result of the proposal resembles an 'exploded view' that has materialized in expansion from the living-dining-kitchen to the outside of the garden.
